Le Monde est Mon Jardin

I'm in Khartoum airport, waiting for my flight to Bangkok via Doha. Not a single decent shop, no newspaper or magazine but, surprisingly, an open internet connection. I'm looking forward to returning to Asia. I can't believe I've already spent 6 months in Darfur. Time is flying.
Everything is, for sure, not perfect. I frequently want to slap some UN employees, lazy, incompetent and present here just for the money. My after work life is more than limited. No cinema, no pub, no concert, no real restaurant, no variety in food. Just a bunch of friends and movies on my laptop.
But those friends are so important. It is so important to have somebody to tease, to speak with, to laugh with. Somebody that will invite you for dinner, or a "party" on his rooftop. Yes, there are wankers in this mission or simply inside the U.N. But you also have amazing person, working 7/7, trying to make things change. It is a pleasure to work with them, to exchange ideas with them. For some of them, it's a first mission. For others, they have been in the system for more than 20 years. But all have had a rich life, have a clear vision of what they are doing and why they're doing it.
I know I got an amazing chance, a one life chance to get this position. I love my job, I love what I do here. It's difficult, challenging but I have a lot of contacts inside and outside the UN and, very important to me, I learn every single day. I improve my skills, discover others and simply have fun doing what I do. Don't ask me where I'll be in one year, I don't know and I don't care for now. My next decision to make should be in June, to extend or not my contract for 6 more months. But right now, it's 2 weeks in Thailand and maybe Cambodia. 2 weeks to take other pictures, (re)discover another world, meet new persons, hear new stories, try new food and relax. A small child exploring the world, his world. My World.
Take care
