Partager mon bain ...

In some villages in Darfur, you need 1.5 hours to transport water between the water point and your house.
You can easily imagine the reaction of the local population when you arrive with a tanker full of water, right in the middle of the village, and start distributing it for free.
In my country, we can drink the water of our bath and we use drinkable water to flush our toilet ...

In a cerebral orbit

Not far away from the Chad border. Lying on a crappy bed. Happy.
I've nothing more to say to you.

Pensees montecristiennes ...

I'm lying on my back, watching the sky, listening to some new music (Thanks I. M. S. !!).
I dream of walking in China, swimming in Thailand, eating in Indonesia. Maybe I should return to my Asia, soon.
After a few days break, I feel it's time to restart taking pictures. Despite some stupid assignments coming, I'm looking forward to returning to the field with my camera.
Life can sometimes be really sweet.

Danse intracranienne ...

I am back in my desert. I'm tired and looking forward to spending some time alone in my room, reading and listening to some good music. The rainy season has started and there is mud and puddles everywhere now. Bushes are suddenly growing very fast and new birds and insects have appeared.
I have plenty of projects in my mind and I'm looking forward to working on it. But I'm also thinking about big vacation, somewhere, with my camera.

EDIT: Actually, I could have spent the long weekend in Uganda (Sunday is exceptionally free this weekend in Sudan) but came back one day to late to book (the free UN flight). At least, I will have the room for myself and time to listen some music.

The Soundtrack of his Own Life ...

I'm waiting at the airport, with some bad memories in mind, and looking forward to taking off. The check-in here is the same that the life in Darfur. You have to fight.
I'm glad I have vacations every six weeks. When I arrived in Darfur, I first thought this stress management program was prepared to release the stress accumulated due to the security situation in Darfur. But I remarked that you get used to the security situation and almost forget it. You start having reflex, some kind of internal procedures to evaluate the situation and to deal with it. And most of the time, the security is not so bad.
No, the problem with this mission, this country, is that you have to fight for everything. Against the mission (no equipment available, enormous amount of administrative work and procedures), against the local people (to make sure they understand you, to make them being more pro-active), against some colleagues (wankers....), against the weather (do I really have to explain), against everything and every single day.
Therefore, a clean bed, a decent weather, a bath, a beer with some friends, a smile to/from a beautiful stranger, some talks about everything but the situation in Darfur sound then like paradise.

Life is strange sometimes:
- My current guesthouse has a wifi connection that almost works but no water in the toilets/shower. Actually, they was some water, till I decided to put some shampoo on my hairs...
- Two nights ago, we got an electricity cut all the night. No fan, no AC, no light in the toilets, no water pump running. Nothing. It was exactly one of the hottest night in Darfur and the night I had to prepare my bag for Khartoum.
- My stomach has been hurting for the last 10 days. Did I eat some bad food lately? No, I started eating more fruits... It seems that I get used to my diet here and my stomach doesn't want to change anymore.. And it happens exactly when I'm planning to enjoy food in Switzerland.
- When I'm traveling, I usually always have a spare toilet paper roll somewhere in my bag or some soap to clean my hands after. Last week, I was in a UNAMID camp. No toilet paper, no soap, just dirty toilets and a bottle of water. Let's call it "UNAMID trying to respect the local usage". But stay positive, It is always pleasant to shake hands from a guy having wet hands, it drills your imagination.
